La Boutanche Gamay 2020

The Wine: Gamay 2020 Olivier Minot La Boutanche Gamay is a red natural wine made from grapes grown organically in Beaujolais, Southern Burgundy, France. Oliver Minot makes his wines as naturally as possible, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites. This a medium to light body red wine, strawberry and cherry on the nose, a slight earthiness for a rather savory and crunchy palate. The Producer: Olivier Minot From Selection Massale's Website Olivier was introduced to us by our good friend, Eric Texier. For a while, he was selling all of his grapes to the local cooperative. However, since he is certified organic, he pressed them to pay a little bit more for superior fruit. Of course they said no, essentially faulting him for farming responsibly, and this is when he began to experiment with winemaking. We are glad he did because the result is glorious. From 70+-year-old gamay vines in southern Beaujolais planted in two parcels with sand and limestone-based soils, respectively. Classic semi-carbonic fermentation with native yeasts in cement tank with absolutely no SO2 added whatsoever. The Region: Beaujolais The Beaujolais wine region is located south of Burgundy. It stretches for about 50km from the town of Mâcon and its characteristic rolling hills to the flatlands bordering the regional capital and world renown culinary center Lyon on the north. Beaujolais wine region is split in two by the Nizerand River. The north of the river is where we find the Crus and Beaujolais Villages, whereas south of the river is where Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau are made. Gamay is the dominant grape varietal of the region giving its best when grown on the granite and sandy clay soils north of the Nizerand River and made into Beaujolais Crus and Beaujolais Villages easy-drinking delicious wines. There are ten Beaujolais Crus where the best Beaujolais are made: Brouilly, Chenas, Chiroubles, Cote de Brouilly, Fleurie, Julienas, Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent, Regnie, and Saint-Amour., The Region: Beaujolais
