Free Your Mind 2020

The Wine: Free Your Mind 2020 Wonderwerk Free Your Mind is a red natural wine made from a blend of 50% Carignan from Sandy Lane Vineyard (Contra Costa County AVA), and 50% Riesling from Zabala Vineyard (Arroyo Seco AVA) farmed sustainably. Carignan was picked at 20.6° brix on august 18. Whole clusters underwent 2 weeks of carbonic maceration before being pressed to tank and fermented nearly dry. Riesling was harvested at 20.4° Brix on September 3, de-stemmed, and fermented on the skins with twice daily pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. At approximately 1/3 Brix depletion, Riesling pump-overs were instead conducted with pressed carbonic carignan, yielding a red riesling fermentation cap. The pressed carbonic Carignan was integrated into the Free Your Mind cuveê over the course of one week. Once dry, the wine was pressed to stainless steel tank, where it underwent malolactic fermentation. Produced without fining or filtration, with 30 ppm sulfur (kmbs) added at bottling. The Producer: Wonderwerk Wonderwerk (House of Fermentation) is Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two high school friends from Virginia seeking new directions in fermentation. We live in LA (Echo Park!) and make supernatural wines from all over California. We produce and bottle with our own hands and feet. We ride the wavelength from low-intervention to high-innovation, making collaborative ideas come to life in funky new ways. Wonderwerk began as a long night on a disco dancefloor (Despacio!) wound down and we didn’t want the party to end. Now, it’s flowed from there into the wines you see and drink today.
